University of Michigan Medical Center Trauma Division to Standardize On Fujitsu Pen Tablets

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — March 30, 1998 — Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc. (FPSI) today announced that its Point 510(TM) with RF pen tablet computers will be deployed across all departments at the Trauma, Burn and Emergency Surgery Division of the University of Michigan Medical Center. The advanced, low-cost Point 510 with RF, which comes integrated with a Proxim RF wireless local area network (LAN) module, was selected for its ability to display high-density data, increase workplace efficiency, and provide healthcare workers with real-time access to patient information. The Point 510 was designed specifically for the healthcare market where cost and performance are critical success factors.

The Point 510 pen computers will be placed on carts with optional keyboards, allowing nurses and physicians to easily access the pen tablets when caring for patients in various rooms. The first phase of the installation will take place in the emergency room. According to Dr. Paul Taheri, interim chief, Trauma Burn Surgery at the University of Michigan, "Our major goals were to eliminate transcription errors that occur between the paper charts and the database, to streamline operations by giving medical staff greater mobility and flexibility, and to lower overall costs. With the new Point 510, nurses and physicians can examine a patient, retrieve and enter relevant data, and maintain an accurate database, all while standing and interacting with patients at the point of care." The Windows(R) 95-based Point 510 offers a 10.4" SuperVGA color display, 100 MHz processor and integrated RF communications, making it ideal for environments that demand high-performance computing and "working mobility."

Additionally, the pen tablet is priced significantly lower than comparable products, enabling organizations — such as those in healthcare — to streamline costs and business processes in order to stay competitive. The mobile computing system solution is being provided by Systems Engineering Consultants (SEC), a leading healthcare and Fujitsu Certified VAR. According to Dr. Vik Kheterpal, chief technology officer at SEC, "A handheld computer that can move around as easily as a clipboard has become a necessity in the ER, where space is at a premium.

Many hospitals around the country are in the same situation as the University of Michigan, in that newer mobile technology needs to be implemented. The new Point 510 offers compelling benefits to the healthcare industry in terms of increased efficiency and lowered costs. In fact, we have many customers waiting to deploy this sort of solution." "Our unique position as the market leader in pen computing led us to design the Point 510 to address the particular needs of the healthcare market," commented Geoff Walker, vice president of marketing for Fujitsu Personal Systems. "Pen tablets meet the need for a rich information display that doesn't interfere with caregiver-patient interaction."
