Tally Systems TS.Census Can Read Your Palm; Asset Tracking Software to Add Recognition for PDA Applications

LEBANON, N.H. — January 29, 2001 — Divining a positive future for better management of Palm Pilots and other hand-held devices, Tally Systems today announced that it has added recognition of PDA synchronization software to its market leading asset tracking software, TS.Census. The new software recognition update to TS.Census, available immediately to TS.Census customers via the web, will allow IT managers to determine which end-users are utilizing Palm-type devices in conjunction with their computers. Tally Systems also announced that it plans to add more detailed recognition of Palm-type hardware and software in the next major release of TS.Census, version 2.0, slated to ship in the first half of 2001.

"We are aiming to take the mystery out of managing Palm-type devices, helping IT managers to figure out who has Palm Pilots and how they are being used to support the organization," says Joanne Egner, Director of Product Management at Tally Systems. "Despite sneaking in the back door at many companies, more and more Palm Pilots are carrying business-critical data that make them just as important to manage, if not more so, than traditional road-warrior tools like laptops. Its extremely difficult to provide adequate support for these devices without knowing more about their configuration and distribution in an organization."

Gartner Group analysis reports that by 2004, 60 percent of office productivity workers will carry at least three mobile computers. Managing this mobile device "invasion" will increasingly become the domain of IT managers as workers encounter support issues when utilizing these devices for their everyday work, according to Tally Systems Marketing Strategy Director Karen Horvath.

"The next great challenge facing IT administrators is getting mobile devices, like Palm Pilots, under the control of the organization, rather than the individual," says Horvath. "As more and more corporate data finds its way onto these devices, they represent both a security and a financial risk that make corporate ownership and management essential. Knowing the application and distribution of mobile devices in an organization is rapidly becoming a mandatory requirement of sound IT management practices."

PDA sync software included in the new TS.Census recognition includes:

Palm Computing Palm Desktop 3.1 Puma Technology Intellisync for PalmPilot 3.6, 4.0 Puma Technology Intellisync for Windows CE 3.6, 4.0 3Com HotSync 3.0 Microsoft ActiveSync 3.0, 3.1 3Com Mobile Connection Manager 1.5 Extended Systems XTNDConnect PC 4.0 IBM EasySync for Organizer & PalmPilot 2.0, 2.2, 2.3 Riverbed Technologies ScoutSync for Palm OS 3.5 Synchrologic iMobile Suite 3.0 (And more..)
