Sybase Ships Latest Version of SQL Anywhere Studio With New UltraLite and MobiLink Technologies

EMERYVILLE, Calif. — April 6, 1999 — Sybase, Inc. (Nasdaq: SYBS) today announced the general availability of the latest version of its industry-leading mobile and embedded database solution, Sybase(R) SQL Anywhere(TM) Studio, which now includes the UltraLite(TM) deployment option and MobiLink enterprise server synchronization technology for the Microsoft Windows CE operating system and 3Com Palm Computing platform. The UltraLite deployment option provides the industry's first application-optimized, ultra-small database that resides locally on handheld devices and embedded systems. MobiLink provides two-way server synchronization, enabling the UltraLite database on a handheld device or embedded system to seamlessly receive information from and send information to an enterprise database.

Together, Sybase's new technologies enable organizations to extend business applications, such as sales force automation and point-of-care, to small devices, thereby increasing employee productivity by allowing access to critical business data anywhere, anytime. More than 600 partners and corporations participated in the beta program for UltraLite and MobiLink, showcasing demand for enterprise-enabled handheld and embedded solutions (see today's related announcement).

"Enabling organizations to extend business applications to PC Companions and embedded systems powered by Windows CE will help fuel the adoption of these devices into the enterprise," said Don Chouinard, product manager, information appliances division, Microsoft Corp. "Microsoft believes Sybase's UltraLite and MobiLink technologies for Windows CE will enable the development of applications that define new uses for PC Companions and embedded systems as intelligent hubs for collecting and distributing mission-critical business data."

"Sybase's delivery of its UltraLite and MobiLink technologies, which extend enterprise applications to handheld devices, is indeed significant for the Palm Computing platform," said Steve Brown, director, business development at Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com company. "We look forward to continued cooperative efforts to drive solutions to the enterprise market for the benefit of our joint customers."

"The availability of enterprise software will be one of the defining factors in driving the acceptance of handheld devices as true enterprise computing tools. Sybase's SQL Anywhere Studio's new UltraLite and MobiLink technologies provide an important foundation for integrating these new devices into enterprise applications," said Tom Kucharvy, president of Boston-based Summit Strategies, Inc.

Extending Enterprise Data to Handheld Devices and Embedded Systems

Sybase SQL Anywhere Studio provides a comprehensive package for mobile computing business needs, designed to lower the total cost of ownership and enable rapid deployment of mobile computing solutions. SQL Anywhere Studio enables users to synchronize data seamlessly from enterprise servers to laptops and handheld computing devices. The addition of UltraLite and MobiLink technologies provides:

* An ultra-small, native database for handheld and embedded devices: The UltraLite deployment technology includes a unique analyzer component that enables developers to create a customized database that contains only features that are required by a particular application. The result is an application-optimized database with a memory "fingerprint" as small as 50K that runs natively on a handheld device or embedded system. UltraLite is designed to significantly enhance developer productivity by leveraging industry-standard SQL for data storage, retrieval and manipulation. In addition, UltraLite has full enterprise power with support for transaction processing, referential integrity, multi-table joins and more.

* Bi-directional synchronization to the enterprise: MobiLink enables two-way server synchronization between an UltraLite database on handheld devices or embedded systems and major enterprise databases, including those from Sybase, Oracle and Microsoft. Because only changed data is synchronized, MobiLink minimizes the communications traffic. In addition, the MobiLink Manager allows easy administration and definition of synchronization and conflict-resolution rules.

"Sybase defined the small footprint mobile and embedded market with SQL Anywhere, and today's delivery of our small fingerprint technology extends Sybase's leadership into emerging markets," Terry Stepien, senior vice president and general manager, Sybase's Mobile and Embedded Computing Division.
