SkyTel Corp. to Offer and Display Motorola NewsCard
WASHINGTON — October 20, 1992 — SkyTel Corp., the country's leader in nationwide wireless messaging, today announced that they will be displaying the Motorola NewsCard(TM) at the SkyTel booth at the COMDEX show in Las Vegas, Nov. 16-19.
"SkyTel is proud to have been involved in the development of Motorola's NewsCard, as well as in the development of other products which put receive capabilities on the PCMCIA type II card format. We believe this is more evidence of the increasing importance of wireless capabilities for computers," said David W. Garrison, president of SkyTel Corp.
"The Motorola NewsCard will make it that much easier for personal computer, palmtop, laptop and PDA customers to incorporate the benefits of wireless communications into their computing devices. It takes pagers from being a display-only, 'dumb' device to incorporating paging receive technology into sophisticated computers," said Garrison.
SkyTel has announced that they will offer the Motorola NewsCard to their customers when it becomes available in 1993. SkyTel is one of the pioneering companies in bringing wireless communications to portable computers. In October 1991, SkyTel and AT&T announced the industry's first "wireless mailbox" for a notebook computer, the AT&T/NCR Safari. The SkyTel Link, which is available through MicroAge, transmits paging information to the AT&T/NCR notebook via the RS-232 serial port.
SkyTel is also jointly marketing the SkyStream receiver in conjunction with the Hewlett-Packard 95LX palmtop, and is working with Apple Computer on wireless capabilities for its "Newton" device.
"We're delighted that SkyTel has endorsed the NewsCard receiver technology and we're pleased that the product will be offered by SkyTel and demonstrated at the COMDEX booth," said Al Zabarsky, director of Motorola's Interactive Data Systems Group.
SkyTel Corp., based in Washington, D.C., is the principal subsidiary of Mobile Telecommunication Technologies Corp. (Mtel) (NASDAQ: MTEL) and the leading nationwide messaging company with 188,500 units in service in the United States as of Sept. 30, 1992.
