Secure Computing Announces SafeWord Strong Authentication for the Palm Computing Platform
SAN JOSE, Calif. — December 14, 1998 — Secure Computing Corporation (Nasdaq: SCUR) and Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com Company (Nasdaq: COMS), today announced the availability of SafeWord(TM) strong authentication for users of Palm Computing(R) platform devices. Users implementing SafeWord's dynamically generated passwords to authenticate to their network through their Palm Computing platform devices are provided the highest level of integrity for their communications. This enables strongly authenticated remote access for a range of corporate applications including personal groupware; data access to corporate databases, including those built with Oracle(TM); and enterprise application packages such as those from Remedy(TM) and SAP(TM).
"As organizations look to expand enterprise data access and commerce applications, they need the assurance that it is being done in the most secure way possible," said Mark Bercow, vice president of strategic alliances and platform development for Palm Computing. "Secure Computing's SafeWord provides dynamically generated password strong authentication which gives our customers the high level of security integrity for their remote access that they demand."
As mobile computing continues to increase, new types of applications will be developed for which laptops are not ideally suited. Users are demanding easy-to-reach, instant access to information, that is accessible where they are working, without needing to carry and frequently reboot cumbersome laptops.
A technical support staff, for example, can use the Palm Handheld device for ready access to data in a mobile environment. Inventory control can be greatly enhanced by making data accessible in real-time, at the touch-of-a-button, virtually eliminating inaccurate data collection.
"Palm Computing is leading the way in enabling both individual users and enterprises to stay connected remotely," said Jay Goldlist, vice president and general manager of the Authentication Division at Secure Computing. "We are pleased that as they look to expand their enterprise offerings to their customers, they recognize the reliability and scalability of Secure Computing's SafeWord. We feel this is further validation of our industry leading scalability and strong authentication."
