NOVALOG to Supply IrDA Modules for Palm Computing Connected Organizers
COSTA MESA, Calif. — September 1, 1998 — NOVALOG, INC., a consolidated and privately financed subsidiary of Irvine Sensors Corporation (Nasdaq: IRSN, BSE: ISC) announced today that Palm Computing Inc., a 3Com company, has chosen the MiniSIR2(TM)-1 module for the Palm Computing(R) platform and family of connected organizers. MiniSIR2-1 is a proprietary wireless infrared (IR) module designed to meet Palm's specifications. It incorporates SIRCommIII(TM), the latest generation of NOVALOG's 115.2 kb/s chip compliant with the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) 1.0 Standard.
"NOVALOG's MiniSIR2-1 fits many of our product requirements including low power consumption and compact size," said Frank Canova, Palm Computing's director of hardware engineering. "NOVALOG's solution helps to enable Palm to deliver leading-edge products to our customers, letting them exchange information wirelessly at the touch of a button."
"Palm Computing devices are recognized as the dominant electronic organizers in the industry," said Ernest J. Abeytia, NOVALOG's Chief Operating Officer. "Their selection of our MiniSIR2 module gives us a strong position in the emerging markets for low-power, hand-held devices, and is recognition of our years of investment in developing the SIRCommIII technology."
The MiniSIR2 family, now available in volume production, is identical in size and form-factor to earlier versions of NOVALOG's award-winning IrDA modules, but offers significant improvements in range and power-control features. It is believed to be the world's smallest, most integrated, lowest power consumption IrDA 1.0-com pliant device available to the market. MiniSIR2 also incorporates a shutdown feature which is attractive for cellular phones, pagers and hand-held personal computers (H/PCs).
MiniSIR2 modules are available to customers on tape and reel. Unit pricing is less than $2.00 in quantities of 100,000 per year. For product and sales information, contact John Chimoures, Director, Worldwide Sales at jchimo@novalog.com, Phone: 1-714-429-1120, or Fax: 1-714-549-5711.
