Mobile Insights Announces Fourth Industry Analyst
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — September 15, 1999 — Mobile Insights (MI), the leading information source for the mobile computing and data communications markets, today announced that it has added a fourth mobile computing industry analyst to the firm. Boston-based Tim Scannell, a well-known industry journalist, author, and analytical expert, joins chief analyst, founder, and CEO Dr. J. Gerry Purdy, Theresa Nozick, and David Hayden as Mobile Insights' newest mobile computing industry analyst.
Scannell is a computer industry veteran, having covered the computer industry as a reporter and editor for the past 20 years. He got his start in computer publishing as a staff writer with Computerworld in 1976 and worked his way up to be technical editor. Scannell left Computerworld in 1984 to become Editor-in-Chief of PC Products magazine, which he helped launch.
He also held senior editorial positions at Cahners Publishing Co., including stints at Mini-Micro Systems magazine and Systems Integration Magazine. For the past decade Scannell worked as an Editorial Director with Softbank Corporation, and helped to establish U.S. publishing operations for several Japan-based publications. He also helped launch several U.S.-based publications in Japan, including PC Magazine, PC Week, LAN Times, and MacUser.
His most recent position was as a Senior Writer with Computer Reseller News and Enterprise Partner, where he covered the Big Five consulting and systems integration companies as well as enterprise-level IT organizations.
Tim has also contributed to several national newspapers and magazines, including USA Today, Newsweek, INC Magazine, The Boston Herald, The Boston Globe, Crain's Net Marketing, and Computer Currents. He authored a book, Keyman USA: A History of the U.S. Computer Industry and Its Heroes, published by Softbank, which was released in Japan. Tim has been a featured speaker at several computer industry conferences, including Mobile Insights, and is a past member of the PC Expo Advisory Board.
With his strong knowledge of the computer industry in general and his emphasis on IT in particular, Tim complements the existing expertise at Mobile Insights. Currently, Gerry Purdy and Theresa Nozick focus on notebook computing, including product segmentation, service and support, mobile storage, displays, and power supply generation. David Hayden, who joined the firm earlier this year, specializes in handheld computing and wireless technology. This includes handheld PCs, PDAs, two-way paging devices, and smart phones.
Tim brings extensive knowledge of the Asian computing market at a time where Mobile Insights is expanding its successful mobile computing conferences to worldwide locations. Mobile Insights held its first "Mobile Perspectives" conference in Taiwan in April 1999. And next week, on September 21-23, Mobile Insights will produce the first "Go Mobile" conference in La Jolla, Calif., where 200 IT executives will convene to discuss their mobile computing issues and concerns.
