Fujitsu Personal Systems’ Stylistic 500 is World’s First Windows 95 Tablet Computer
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — December 18, 1995 — Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc. broke new ground in mobile computing today with the industry's first implementation of Microsoft's Windows 95 operating system on a tablet PC.
Starting immediately, Fujitsu will offer the high-performance Stylistic 500 preconfigured with Windows 95, putting the increased functionality and ease-of-use of Microsoft's next-generation operating system at the fingertips of mobile workers.
Featuring an Intel 486 DX2-50 microprocessor, system memory expandable to 20 megabytes (MB) and disk storage up to 340MB, the system offers the computing power and functionality necessary to run the full implementation of Windows 95. This configuration allows corporations standardizing on the Windows operating environment to establish a consistent upgrade strategy for both their desktop and mobile systems.
"Corporations around the world are moving decisively toward Windows 95 as the operating environment of choice for their desktop systems," said Lou Panetta, executive vice president of Fujitsu Personal Systems. "At the same time, our customers are demanding one-to-one compatibility between desktop applications and the mobile environment. The Stylistic 500 enables them to standardize on a single user interface for all corporate computing platforms."
In the future, Fujitsu's handheld computing products will display the "Designed for Windows 95" logo. "It is our intent to meet Microsoft's PC 95 specification for Windows 95 compatibility in new mobile platforms, ensuring our customers that their computing environment will support future Windows 95-based applications and their 32-bit development environments," said Panetta.
In addition, the Stylistic 500 supports Pen Services 2.0, Microsoft's improved pen driver system that can be specifically configured by a VAR, ISV or OEM to provide end users with application-specific pen capabilities linked to the powerful, flexible and increasingly dominant Windows 95 operating environment.
Measuring 7.2" x 10.7" x 1.5", the Stylistic 500 is a 2.6-pound tablet computer designed for mobile workers running high-end decision support applications in such industries as insurance, utilities, sales automation, pharmaceuticals and healthcare.
Powered by an Intel 486 DX2-50 CPU, the system features RAM expandable to 20 MB; two Type I/II/III PCMCIA version 2.0 slots; and an 8-inch transmissive backlit, 64-level VGA screen. It is the only tablet computer to operate on standard Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) batteries, which can be purchased in most consumer retail outlets.
