Fujitsu Personal Systems Launches First Windows NT Mobile Pen PC
July 28, 1997 — Fujitsu Personal Systems (UK) Ltd, (FPS) the pen PC specialist, has launched the world's first pen computer to run Windows NT. The Pentium powered Stylistic 1200 can run three operating systems including Windows NT Workstation 4.0, has a shock mounted 1.44 GB hard disk as standard, supports all four LCD industry display technologies including colour TFT, and offers universal connectivity. It is also the first pen PC to include Universal Serial Bus (USB), a 128 bit video controller and Zoomed Video architecture.
The Stylistic 1200 was developed to meet the computing needs of mobile workforces, enabling enterprise wide 'on the spot' decision support. It enables broad applicability for both private and public organisations, using a powerful mobile tool to streamline procedures, increase productivity, efficiency and competitiveness, improve customer services and cut costs.
Louis Jouanny, Fujitsu Personal Systems vice president of international marketing said: "The Stylistic 1200 gives mobile workforces the power and productivity of a laptop in the palm of their hands, wherever and whenever they need it. This standards based pen PC enables integration and communication with enterprise systems. It opens up the way for an even greater variety of practical decision support systems across a much wider range of business and public sector activities than ever before. It's small, fast, light, and extremely versatile."
The Stylistic 1200 is designed to bring power and versatility to activities where mobility is an essential prerequisite, such as sales force automation, the automotive industry, insurance, healthcare, utilities, market research, GIS, pharmaceuticals, technical services, transportation etc. Companies currently using FPS pen computers in the UK include Audatex, MORI, Ordnance Survey, Taylor-Nelson AGB and Trebor Bassett.
The Stylistic 1200's ability to run Windows NT offers several new and critical benefits for these types of enterprises. It allows them to standardise on Windows NT throughout, giving 32 bit mission critical applications for daily use: – including in their mobile pen computers. Windows NT offers superior stability, security and administrative capabilities, lowering the ownership cost for enterprise applications. Windows NT supplied with the Stylistic 1200 includes power management support and enhanced PC Card compatibility. The Stylistic 1200 is also available with Windows 95 or Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
The Stylistic 1200 is the first pen PC with a 120 MHZ Pentium processor, Universal Serial Bus, (USB), 128 bit video controller and Zoomed Video. It measures 11.1" x 7.4" x 1.6" (28.3cm x 18.8cm x 4.1cm) and weighs 3.9 lbs (1.8 Kg) with battery pack. The battery life is again best in class, up to four hours. A shock mounted 1.44 GB hard drive is standard, with 2.1 GB as an option. This enables customers to keep on top of the growing size of their remote database applications. 16 MB of EDO RAM memory is standard, expandable up to 48 MB.
The Stylistic 1200 is the first pen computer to support all four LCD industry display technologies. There is a TFT colour display, providing more than 256, 000 colours and a wide viewing angle to make it easy to see and share information. DSTN colour, transmissive or transflective monochrome screens are also available, to match the screen to the application and lighting conditions.
A comprehensive range of connectivity methods is available, including IrDA, two full RS-232 serial ports, as well as monitor, parallel, keyboard, mouse, floppy and replicator ports, Sound Blaster compatible audio system (with internal microphone and speaker, and four input/output jacks), and two USB ports. Two Type II/one Type III PC Card 3.0 (CardBus) slots are offered.
The Stylistic 1200 supports a broad range of LAN and WAN radios, easily slipped into a PC Card slot. It is Radio Ready to optimise PC Card WAN radios – the customer's radio does not interfere with the computer and vice versa. This increases radio range by accepting weaker signals.
With mono display, 16 MB of RAM, 1.44 GB hard disk and Windows 95, the Stylistic 1200's expected volume price is GBP 2,100. With TFT colour display and the above specification the expected volume price is GBP 2,700.
The Stylistic 1200 is available through over 300 VARs and system integrators worldwide and first shipments will begin in August 1997.
