Dendrite International Announces PRINCIPIA for Apple’s Newton MessagePad
WARREN, N.J. — August 2, 1993 — Dendrite International Inc., a leading supplier of sales force automation technology and services for the worldwide pharmaceutical industry, announced Friday the launch of PRINCIPIA(TM) as the first sales force automation software for the Newton MessagePad, Apple Computer's first personal Digital Assistant (PDA).
The announcement was made by Dendrite CEO John Bailye at Apple's press conference, immediately following the unveiling of the Newton MessagePad. The Dendrite family of PRINCIPIA software and support products, available via plug-in PCMCIA card, is specifically designed to exploit the full potential of the Newton MessagePad, which provides pen-based note-taking and electronic signature capture with personal utilities such as calendar, addresses, phone numbers and remote dialing. The initial PRINCIPIA product will support database functionality and utilizing Newton MessagePad's signature capture function, track product samples. Future product releases are expected to incorporate progressively all sale force automation functionality. Combined, Dendrite PRINCIPIA and Newton MessagePad will transform sales force automation for the worldwide healthcare and pharmaceutical industry segments by giving sales forces a more attractive, productive, easier-to-use interface for their existing system.
''We developed PRINCIPIA using Apple's Newton MessagePad technology because it is the only hand-held communicator that meets Dendrite's standards for intelligent computing,'' said Bailye, who was recently named ''New Jersey's Software and High Technology Entrepreneur of the Year'' by Ernst & Young and ''Inc.'' magazine.
''The Newton MessagePad provides intelligent assistance which means it can anticipate what the user wants to do and provide assistance. Coupled with PRINCIPIA, it becomes a skillful assistant to a sales and marketing representative.''
Continued Bailye, ''At Dendrite, we don't use technology unless it's going to help our clients advance their goals. Dendrite's Product SPECTRUM of territory management systems for analysis and planning is designed for strategic application. So, we waited until a pen-based system was developed that would enhance the strategic performance of our product. Apple's Newton MessagePad was the only one to meet our requirements.''
The Dendrite systems combine computers, customized software and, unique to the industry, dedicated customer services to enable sales representatives and executives to maximize productivity and increase market share. Dendrite custom software integrates data from third-party sources, the field and the home office and transforms it into information that makes it easy for sales representatives and their managers to analyze and plan sales strategy, target and track customer calls, and much more.
Dendrite developed its Product SPECTRUM – SalesStar(TM), SalesStar Plus(TM), Dendrite 4.1 System and 5.0 Productivity Multiplier – to enable companies to strategically expand their territory management capabilities through an organized and managed path of sales force automation systems. PRINCIPIA will broaden the Dendrite product range from entry-level systems for the healthcare company that is just beginning to build a database of customers and contacts, to speciality sales forces (e.g hospital, institutional) within sales organizations that are already automated. This application will become increasingly important as the healthcare industry reegineers its business practices in the United States, and automation moves into Eastern Europe and emerging Third World markets.
The worldwide healthcare industry has turned to sales force automation as an invaluable tool for improving the productivity and efficiency of sales and marketing efforts in the face of growing pressure to cut costs, increase efficiency and respond to ever more stringent regulatory reporting requirements.
Dendrite International became the pharmaceutical industry's market leader in 1992 when the number of Dendrite system users exceeded 15,000 worldwide. More than 45 subsidiaries of the world's major healthcare companies, such as Eli Lilly, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer and Bayer, use a Dendrite system. They are supported by a staff of over 300 Dendrite people in nine offices around the world, including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States where Dendrite's International headquarters is located in Warren, N.J. PRINCIPIA is a trademark of Dendrite International Inc. Apple is a registered trademark, and Newton and MessagePad are trademarks of Apple Computer Inc.
