AvantGo Expands Further Into the Wireless World
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — December 2, 1998 — At the Second Annual Palm Computing(R) Platform Worldwide Developer Conference today, AvantGo, Inc., the authority in managing mobile information, announced support for Palm Computing's new Palm VII(TM) connected organizer expected to be available in 1999. AvantGo's software, which will run on the new devices, delivers users a comprehensive and scalable solution for extending enterprise and Web-based applications to handheld computers. Using AvantGo, users can access information when they are connected to a wireless network, as well as when they are disconnected.
The Palm VII connected organizer is the first handheld solution for out-of-the-box wireless communications and Internet access. Used in combination with AvantGo, the solution makes it possible for mobile executives to obtain and respond to critical business information stored in any corporate database – anywhere and anytime – via their handheld computer. "We are delighted that AvantGo is making its award-winning software available on our Palm VII connected organizer. AvantGo delivers corporate data connectivity and administration that will enable the Palm VII product to flourish in the enterprise environment," said Gabriel Acosta-Lopez for Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com company.
AvantGo Delivers a Wide Range of Content
Using the Palm VII connected organizer, AvantGo users can subscribe, free of charge, to any of AvantGo's more than 500 content partner Channels, including the Wall Street Journal Interactive, the New York Times, USA Today, Fox Sports and more. Additionally, the Palm VII organizer allows AvantGo users to take advantage of 3Com's new model for accessing Internet information, called Web Clipping. Web Clipping is a means of extracting a specific set of needed information from a given Web site, by requesting certain types of information via special query forms that reside on the Palm VII device. In both cases, information received is automatically optimized for viewing on the device and delivers interactive functionality both online and offline.
AvantGo's Server Synchronization is Network Independent
AvantGo synchronizes internet and corporate applications and data to handhelds over dialup, desktop, kiosk and wireless connections using standard Internet Protocols (IP) for communication between the AvantGo Server and handheld computers today. Though the Palm VII organizer is not based on an IP network, all existing AvantGo synchronization functionality will be enabled through the Palm VII organizer. "AvantGo is designed to deliver any application to any handheld via any network," said Felix Lin, CEO of AvantGo. "The Palm VII connected organizer has proven that vision for us again, and will provide an excellent endpoint for enterprise users who demand offline and online support in a compact form factor."
