America Online is First to Provide Services for Palmtop Computers
VIENNA, Va. — June 3, 1993 — At a joint press briefing held today at the Consumer Electronics Show, America Online, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AMER), disclosed details of services it will provide on the palmtop edition of America Online, aimed at the emerging mobile computing market. The palmtop edition of America Online will be built into the personal information processor to be sold by Casio Computer Co., LTD. and Tandy Corporation (NYSE: TAN) this fall.
"We want to be the first to bring the benefits of mobile computing to online service subscribers, just as we were the first to bring graphical computing to the online world in the 1980s," said Steve Case, president and CEO of America Online.
The palmtop edition of America Online will feature services that target the specific needs of mobile computer users. Using hand-held portable information devices, subscribers to America Online's palmtop edition will have access to affordable, easy-to-use services, with a graphical look and feel like the full suite of other applications offered on the Zoomer platform. These services include:
— Powerful electronic mail access including an international internet gateway to MCI Mail, AT&T Easylink and CompuServe.
— FAX capabilities.
— Up-to-the-minute news, business and sports from leading newswires.
— Stock quotes and portfolio management.
— Useful travel services including airline, hotel and car rental reservations through the EAASY SABRE Travel Service.
— Direct support from PDA manufacturers and free members online support from America Online.
