aha! software Ships its InkWriter Application for Magic Cap-based Personal Communicators

SAN JOSE, Calif. — June 1, 1995 — aha! software's InkWriter(R) package is now available for Magic Cap(TM)-based devices including Sony'S Magic Link(TM) communicator, satisfying a growing demand for editing capability for electronic handwriting applications while creating handwritten electronic documents such as e-mail messages and faxes.

aha! InkWriter is based on aha!'s patent-pending SmartInk(R) technology, which enables the intelligent editing and manipulation of electronic ink and text. InkWriter lets users write in electronic ink on their Sony Magic Link communicator or other Magic Cap-based devices and then edit their handwriting with the power and speed of a word processor.

With InkWriter software, handwritten words can be instantly deleted, inserted, italicized or made bold with a few quick taps of the stylus. When words are deleted or moved, the surrounding handwriting is instantly rewrapped to ensure a continuous flow of words and eliminate unnatural gaps or spaces. InkWriter software's SmartInk technology captures and edits an individual's unique handwriting, but does not rely upon handwriting recognition to deliver its productivity-enhancing benefits.

"aha! InkWriter software allows users of Magic Cap-based devices to quickly capture information in a variety of business and personal situations, and then easily edit and polish the results to transform handwritten notes into useful communications," said Greg Stikeleather, president and CEO of aha! software.

"Usability studies show that writing by hand is faster than using on-screen keyboards or handwriting recognition systems," Stikeleather added. "InkWriter software's underlying SmartInk technology makes it the fastest, most convenient way to create faxes, notes, and messages. InkWriter gives users the power to better craft their communications for users of Magic Cap-based products, as well as the millions of people who use faxes and electronic mail."

InkWriter software als supports keyboard-generated text. Additional capabilities include:

– Wrap-to-Fit fax output – only InkWriter intelligently rewraps and formats both text and handwriting to the wider paper size for professional-looking faxes.

– Immediate adjustment of text and ink handwriting size, making it possible to "write big but read small."

– Seamless switching between writing, sketching, editing and mark-up, with sketches and mark-ups scaled for different window and page formats.

– Multi-level Undo and Redo to take care of writing and editing mistakes.

– Moving handwritten documents between Magic Cap-based personal communicators and WindowsTM-based computers (equipped with InkWriter for Windows).

"We are committed to supporting great third-party software applications for the Sony Magic Link communicator. aha! InkWriter software adds significant new features for Magic Link users and increases their productivity," said Alex Gruzen, director of Product Marketing for Sony's Personal Information Company. "It's ideal for taking notes in business meetings, and sending quick faxes and e-mail messages to business and personal contacts."

aha's InkWriter software is available directly from Sony Electronics at a suggested retail price of $ 129. InkWriter can be ordered by calling 1-800-571-SONY (7699).
