3Com Ships 16-Bit PC Cards for Notebook Users
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — October 7, 1997 — WHO: 3Com Corporation, Mobile Communications Division
WHAT: Fast EtherLink 16-Bit PC Card is available for notebook users. Products are available for review and executives are available for press interviews.
WHY: As corporate networks migrate to Fast Ethernet, notebook users must acquire a 10/100 network interface card (NIC). These users have three choices: a docking station with a desktop NIC, a 16-bit PC Card for most notebooks with 16-bit PC Card slots, or a 32-bit CardBus PC Card for the newest notebooks equipped with CardBus PC Card slots. With the availability of the Fast EtherLink 16-Bit PC Card, 3Com now supports all three choices.
This new product takes advantage of 3Com's patented Parallel Tasking(R) technology and DynamicAccess(TM) features to deliver the same high-performance network connectivity as 3Com's market-leading Fast EtherLink desktop network interface cards (NICs). Since 16-bit PC Card slots operate at speeds similar to the ISA bus on desktops, they cannot provide full 100 Mbps throughput. The 3Com Fast EtherLink 16-Bit PC Card is designed for those notebooks with a 16-bit PC Card slot, and allows throughput in the 20-30 Mbps range.
WHEN: Products are available immediately.
HOW: The Fast EtherLink 16-Bit PC Card sells for a U.S. list price of $ 189 for a single card, $ 179 per card in a five-pack and $ 174 per card in a 20-pack. For network managers who want to evaluate 3Com's Fast EtherLink PC Cards, single quantity evaluation units are available for a U.S. list price of $ 95 by calling 1-800-NET-3COM. 3Com's Ethernet and Fast Ethernet PC Cards are available through the company's worldwide network of resellers and distributors. 3Com supports all its network interface cards with a money-back guarantee and an industry-leading lifetime warranty.
