3Com Broadens Mobile Computing Solutions With Two PC Cards Optimized for Windows
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — October 6, 1997 — 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) today announced two new PC Card (PCMCIA) modems optimized for use with Windows(r)-based laptop computers. The new offerings, designed to work exclusively with Microsoft Windows, include a Megahertz(r) 56Kbps PC Card Modem with x2(tm) technology; and a Megahertz 33.6Kbps International PC Card Modem which is x2 upgradeable.
By better utilizing the power of the high speed microprocessor found in notebook computers for compression and error detection, the new x2 PC Card delivers a performance advantage, while the new international PC Card provides connections worldwide.
Modem Card Outperforms Competition by 50% The Megahertz x2 PC Card modem, model numbers XJ2560 and CC2560, harnesses the power of the Windows operating system to deliver a performance advantage over competing PC Cards or internal notebook computer modems. Independent testing shows the XJ2560 outperforming the competition operating in Windows 95. In fact, results from Henderson Labs, October 3, 1997, show the XJ2560 transferring data more than 50 percent faster than the competition. Users will see the benefit of this improved throughput when sending or receiving highly compressible files and mixed file types.
Using x2 technology, the new Megahertz XJ2560 gives users access to the Internet, corporate intranets and on-line connections over standard analog phone lines. And customers using 3Com modems with x2 technology can download information significantly faster than users of 28.8Kbps modems, through the more than 850 Internet Service Providers who already make x2 available with more than 7000 Points of Presence. In addition, the XJ2560 modem features the exclusive XJACK(r) connector system, providing a convenient alternative to cable connectors, and allowing direct connection to any standard RJ11 telephone cord. Cabled versions are available under the CC2560 model number.
International Travelers Stay Connected Worldwide The Megahertz 33.6 Kbps International PC Card modem, model number CC2336i, delivers hassle-free connections around the world. It features the new 3Com WorldPort(r) Country Select Software, allowing simple country-to-country configuration. Users simply select the country they desire in an easy-to-use setup screen, and the modem is automatically configured for that location. This intuitive software is matched with a series of adapters to make staying connected during international travel easier than ever. The CC2336i modem connects at up to 33.6 Kbps, with an x2 upgrade available in early 1998.
Both new cards include Intelligent Auto Install, a new feature which works with the operating system for easy hassle-free installation in minutes. The PC Cards also include 3Com's patented Digital Line Guard to protect the modem from damage if connected to a digital telephone line while on the road. The PC Cards are also guaranteed a free upgrade for x2 users to the 56 Kbps modem standard after it is adopted by the ITU-T.(a)
