AvantGo Joins GPRS Application Alliance

SAN MATEO, Calif. — February 28, 2000 — AvantGo, Inc., the authority in managing mobile information, today announced that it has teamed up with Ericsson Inc. and joined the GPRS Application Alliance (GAA), an Ericsson-led initiative designed to support the rapid creation and adoption of Mobile Internet applications based on the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) standard. Other Alliance members include IBM, Palm Computing, Lotus, Oracle and Symbian. The relationship with Ericsson is another important step for Mobile Unity(TM), AvantGo's commitment to consumers, content providers and carriers to deliver Web-based information and applications to all classes of wireless devices.

The convergence of telecommunications and data communications, GPRS is a packet data overlay to the GSM digital cellular standard that will allow higher transmission speeds and continuous mobile connectivity. Using GPRS and AvantGo software will allow consumers with wireless devices to have "always connected, always on-line" access to optimized AvantGo.com channels of content and interactive applications and mobile professionals access to their corporate intranet, as well as extranet applications. On the fly, AvantGo reformats and compresses industry-standard HTML, delivering content to mobile device users over the wireless network more quickly, more reliably and more cost-effectively.

"We are very pleased to have AvantGo join the GAA, which aims to ensure that high-quality Mobile Internet applications are available to users around the world," said Per Nordlof, vice president and general manager, Packet Switching Systems, Ericsson Radio Systems AB. "With GPRS, Mobile Internet users will have faster and cheaper wireless access to important information."

"We are delighted to be teaming up with Ericsson and the GAA to allow mobile users worldwide to access AvantGo Enterprise and AvantGo.com, our free interactive Internet service, wirelessly," said Stuart Read, vice president of marketing at AvantGo. "We have a strong commitment to standards and we are in support of wireless standards that make it easier for individuals to obtain the information they want and need any time, anywhere."
