Secure Computing Announces Availability of Software Authenticator for the Palm Computing Platform, Microsoft Windows CE and Sharp Zaurus Handheld Devices

SAN JOSE, Calif. — March 22, 1999 — Secure Computing Corporation (Nasdaq: SCUR) today announced the availability of greatly enhanced security offerings for an array of smart handheld devices including the Microsoft Windows CE operating system, Palm Computing(R) platform devices such as the Palm V(TM) and Palm III(TM) connected organizers, and Sharp Zaurus(TM). The company announced software authenticators for these devices are now shipping for Sharp Zaurus in Japan, and will be available worldwide for the Palm Computing Platform and Windows CE operating system in April. These developments follow the company's announcement in late 1998 that it licensed its authentication technology to Ericsson Telecommunications for use in the Swedish telecommunications giant's future phone handset developments. The company today also announced the formation of a new business unit dedicated to providing customer focused security solutions for users of handheld devices such as personal digital assistants, smart digital telephones and handheld PC companions (see related release March 22, 1999).

"As the adoption rate of Windows CE-based devices increases, organizations are demanding more sophisticated security options," said Roger Gulrajani, group product manager, information appliances division, Microsoft Corp. "Secure Computing's method of generating one-time encrypted passwords is a great addition to the wide array of security options in Windows CE."

"As organizations expand enterprise data access and commerce applications, they need the assurance that it is being done in the most secure way possible," said Gabriel Acosta-Lopez, director of platform development services for Palm Computing, Inc., a 3Com company. "Secure Computing's solution providing dynamically generated passwords is embedded on the Palm Pilot, giving our customers the high level of security integrity via strong authentication for their remote access that they demand."

With the implementation of the Secure Computing software authenticator on Sharp Zaurus devices, users are now able to access information remotely with the highest level of security. Sharp's large customer base of life insurance companies and banks are among the early adopters who are quickly realizing the immediate business benefits of this solution.

The technological foundation for the handheld security is Secure Computing SafeWord(TM) strong authentication. Users implementing SafeWord's dynamically generated passwords to authenticate to their network through their handheld devices are provided the highest level of integrity for their communications. This enables strongly authenticated remote access for a range of corporate applications including messaging, email, Web access, finance and accounting, inventory management and healthcare. SafeWord strong authentication provides unparalleled scalability, reliability and performance. Centralized authentication and distributed authorization enable the implementation of policy-based management initiatives.

"There is significant need in the smart handheld market to provide strong authentication and security in order to assure mobile professionals and organizations the integrity of their transmissions," said Jay Goldlist, Vice President and General Manager Enterprise Security Division at Secure Computing. "For those organizations having large numbers of users going through their servers, scalability is a crucial differentiator in selecting a security solution. In order for applications on these devices to become a part of mainstream business, they must be secure and reliable."
