Tegic Communications to Demonstrate T9 Text Input for 3Com PalmPilot Organizers

NEW YORK — June 15, 1998 — Tegic Communications will stage a special demonstration of T9(tm) text input for the 3Com PalmPilot(tm) connected organizer this week at PC EXPO 98 in 3Com's (Nasdaq:COMS) Partner Pavilion booth number 3962.

T9 text input allows users to quickly and easily enter information from a touch-screen keypad on their PalmPilot organizer. Fewer, larger keys group letters together to make text entry fast, easy and intuitive — with virtually nothing to learn. To type any word, a user simply taps each key with the stylus. T9 decodes the keystrokes to determine the correct word, automatically.

"We are delighted that Tegic Communications has developed T9 text input for the Palm Computing(R) platform," said Mark Bercow, vice president of strategic alliances and platform development at Palm Computing, a 3Com Company. "Tegic Communications' software appeals to users who prefer to type rather than write."

Tegic Communications anticipates T9 text input for the PalmPilot organizer to be available as early as third quarter 1998. It will be compatible with the Pilot 5000, the PalmPilot Professional, the PalmPilot Personal, and the Palm III(tm) connected organizers, as well as Palm Computing-based devices from IBM, Symbol Technologies and Franklin Covey

"We believe T9 is the ultimate text input power tool for the busy mobile professional," said R. Larry Atwell, senior product manager with Tegic Communications. "T9 affords mobile users the benefit of entering text on the go without having to learn a new alphabet."

According to Atwell, many individuals use Graffiti software and like it, but there are others who've never taken the time to properly learn it. T9 is extremely intuitive and can be used in conjunction with Graffiti.

PalmPilot organizer consumers using T9 will be able to make the most of an array of applications. With the T9 keypad, users have full punctuation capabilities and access to a wide variety of symbols. They'll also be able to find proper names and can add any personal name or word to T9.

In addition to T9 for the PalmPilot organizer, Tegic Communications is licensing its technology to major communications and consumer electronics manufacturers worldwide. Tegic Communications has world wide patents pending for T9 text input.
