Palm Computing Supplies Windows Connectivity Software for the New HP OmniGo 100 Handheld Organizer
LOS ALTOS, Calif. — October 16, 1995 — Palm Computing, Inc., a subsidiary of U.S. Robotics Corp., today announced that Hewlett-Packard Company has selected Palm's popular connectivity software to provide a comprehensive Connectivity Pack for HP's new OmniGo 100 handheld organizer.
The HP OmniGo 100 Connectivity Pack features Palm's HotSync, which automatically backs up and synchronizes the organizer with a Windows desktop PC. It also includes companion Appointment Book, Phone Book and NotePad applications for data entry on the PC.
The Connectivity Pack will be sold by HP as an enhancement for the new organizer. It was developed by Palm in cooperation with HP and Geoworks, Inc., the provider of the GEOS operating system platform for the HP OmniGo 100 handheld organizer. The Connectivity Pack will operate as application software running on a Windows-based desktop PC for easy transfer and synchronization of personal information management (PIM) applications.
"Desktop PC connectivity is essential for productive use of a hand-held organizer," said Donna Dubinsky, president and CEO of Palm Computing. "The data synchronization, back-up and access to the PC's full-size keyboard and screen provided by Palm's software all ensure that data on the HP OmniGo 100 organizer is safe, current and easily accessed on both machines. The Connectivity Pack is an invaluable tool for OmniGo 100 customers."
Gordon Mayer, president and CEO of Geoworks, stated, "A primary objective for the HP OmniGo 100 organizer is to provide a comprehensive solution that supports all the applications software and extensions that users need to maximize the potential of their organizer. Connectivity to the desktop PC is a critical part of this solution. Partnering with Palm has enabled us to provide HP OmniGo 100 organizer users with an elegant, fast, and compelling connectivity option."
The HP OmniGo 100 Connectivity Pack provides a number of key features based on Palm's connectivity software. With Palm's HotSync synchronization software, the Connectivity Pack provides automatic back up and synchronization of data. Full Microsoft Windows compatibility ensures that users can cut and paste information to and from other Windows programs. With Palm's Desktop Personal Information Manager (PIM), the Connectivity Pack allows the user to enter and sort appointments, notes and address information using the full-size PC keyboard and screen and then transfer that information to the HP OmniGo 100 organizer during the next HotSync. The Connectivity Pack can support several HP OmniGo 100 organizer users with a single PC, so one person can handle scheduling and updating for several others.
