Fujitsu’s New Point 1600 Pen Tablet Delivers Outstanding Value and Performance

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — January 18, 1999 — Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc. (FPSI), the leader in the Windows pen tablet market, today introduced the Point 1600(TM) pen computer. With a 166 MHz Pentium MMX processor and a shock-mounted 4.1 GB Ultra ATA hard drive, the Point 1600 more than doubles the performance of its predecessor, the Point 510(TM), while maintaining the same low price. A 10.4" Super VGA (SVGA) color display, superior communications and the "Designed for Windows 98" logo add to the Point 1600's attractiveness as a mobile computing solution for organizations – such as healthcare and merchandising – that are value-sensitive and require a large, high information-density display.

"The new Point 1600 delivers an exceptionally cost-effective solution for mobile workers who need on-the-spot decision support from a high-performance system with a color-rich display," commented Geoff Walker, vice president of marketing for FPSI. "Building on seven generations of handheld computer design, the Fujitsu Point 1600 enjoys the benefits of field-proven experience and further extends the use of pen tablet computers to environments where laptops are impractical. An extremely reliable and technologically advanced pen tablet computer, the Point 1600 is a highly effective and affordable platform for a mobile computing systems solution." The Point 1600 offers the best value of any pen tablet on the market today, making it well suited for industries such as healthcare and merchandising. With a 166 MHz Pentium MMX processor, 32 MB of SDRAM memory (expandable to 96 MB) and a 4.1 GB shock-mounted hard drive, users have the capability to run demanding applications such as voice recognition.

With industry-leading power and heat management in a proven mechanical design, Fujitsu's Point 1600 is the most dependable Windows pen tablet computer available. A large 10.4" DSTN screen delivers crisp SVGA resolution (800 x 600) and 65,536 colors, allowing the Point 1600 to display the same high-density information available on a typical desktop PC. This technology provides the same rich graphics as a traditional PC monitor, giving users accustomed to viewing desktop monitors an easy migration to pen tablets. The Point 1600 is available with an embedded PC Card slot that offers a flexible, cost-effective and secure environment for superior communications. Customers may choose an embedded Proxim(R) RangeLAN2(TM) wireless LAN or a 3Com(R) 56K V.90 global modem option for added value, more security and greater reliability than add-on PC Card solutions. A separate, user-accessible PC Card slot is available for other peripherals. In addition, the Point 1600 is "Radio-Ready," which ensures compatibility while operating the computer with wide-area wireless network radios.

The Point 1600 offers a wide range of standard connectivity that significantly increases the flexibility and applicability of a mobile computing system. This connectivity includes an IrDA port, an RS-232 serial port, an Rx/Tx serial port, a keyboard port, a mouse port, a monitor port, a parallel port, a floppy drive port, two audio input/output jacks, a universal serial bus (USB) port, high-usage docking contacts and a connector for port replication. The high-usage docking contacts on the Point 1600 allow users to insert and remove the pen tablet from a dock over 100,000 times, providing years of around-the-clock use. This capability is ideal for placing battery-charging and peripheral-access cradles conveniently throughout a hospital or walk-in clinic. Based on extensive customer feedback, the Point 1600 was designed to work with most of the cradles and peripherals built for the Point 510, extending customer and partner investments in pen tablet technology. The Point 1600 is available with Windows 95 or Windows 98 operating systems, and both 32-bit and 16-bit pen support. Offering a robust design with full Windows compatibility, the Point 1600 has passed Year 2000 compliance testing conducted by NSTL Labs, the computer industry's leading third-party testing organization.

Pricing and Availability

The single unit list price for the Point 1600 is $ 3,375. The price that a corporation typically pays in volume is considerably less. Along with the jointly announced Stylistic 2300(TM), the Point 1600 is available now through more than 400 value-added resellers (VARs) and systems integrators worldwide.
