Fujitsu Personal Systems Radio Gives Mobile Pen PC Workers an Elastic Network

July 16, 1998 — Fujitsu Personal Systems (UK) Ltd, (FPS), the pen PC specialist, now provides integrated radio communications on the Point 510 RF, its low cost, large colour screen handheld mobile pen PC. This lets mobile workforces collect information, take decisions, transmit and receive data simultaneously to and from central network servers.

This Windows 95 computer has been designed in conjunction with key users in healthcare, FMCS, retail and air transport who need the benefits of real time computing through integrated radio communications for their mobile workforces.

The Point 510 RF, with 10.4" SVGA colour screen, is designed as a cost effective way to streamline processes such as Electronic record gathering inside and outside hospitals, FMCS product control, retail store management and air transport check in and passenger monitoring.

"FPS pen computers give mobile workforces the power of a PC in the palms of their Hands. The Point 510 RF with integrated radio now also gives them an elastic network – stretching from the server to wherever the user needs to work locally with their FPS pen PCs. People can use the Point 510 RF on the move, anywhere they want to in their local environment and still benefit from real time computing," said Louis Jouanny, FPS's vice president, international marketing.

The Radio Ready system developed by Fujitsu, cuts interference between radio and computer, increasing the Point 510 RFs working radio range by accepting weaker signals.

According to Louis Jouanny, "Customers told us they wanted a market focussed product, which had to be application, rather than technology led. The Point 51 0 RF provides better 'on the spot' decision support for mobile workforces through usable power and performance for application tools, with the added benefits of radio and audio systems."

The 'Designed for Windows 95' Point 510 RF has many advantages over limited function PDAs and their proprietary operating systems. Windows 95 compatibility allows users to leverage development expertise and applications both in-house and through value added resellers (VARs). The Point 510 RF mobile pen PC runs the same applications users run on their desktops and laptops.

There are optional high usage industrial strength docks, that allow the Point 510 RF to be inserted and removed up to 50,000 times. These can be placed strategically throughout an organisation, providing battery charging and/or keyboard and mouse for round the clock use of the Point 510 RFs over many years.

The Point 510 RF has a 100 MHZ 5×86 processor, 10.4" SVGA colour screen, shock mounted 2.1 GB hard drive, a wide range of ports including IrDA, RS-232 serial, Rx/Tx second serial, keyboard, mouse, monitor, parallel, floppy, audio in/out and port replicator, one Type III PC Card slot, a long life lithium-ion battery and 8 MB EDO RAM memory, expandable up to 64 MB. It measures 11.7" x 8.7" x 1.4" (29.7cm x 22.2cm x 3.6cm), and weighs 3.9lbs (1.8 Kg) with battery pack, radio and antenna, and 3.74lbs, (1.7 Kg) without radio.

Fujitsu Personal Systems is the world leader in Windows compatible pen PCs. The company's aim is to extend the benefits of true working mobility to the broadest possible base of employees. FPS focuses on mobile decision support applications for large organisations and government institutions and is supported by a worldwide network of certified VARs and systems integrators.
