Phoenix Technologies Announces Enhancements to Popular PhoenixBIOS 4.0 System Software

ORLANDO, Fla. — March 25, 1998 — Phoenix Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:PTEC) — the leading supplier of standards-based compatibility software for the PC industry — today announced new features and enhancements to its popular PhoenixBIOS 4.0 that will allow systems manufacturers to deliver improved product performance while reducing development costs and time-to-market requirements. Among the enhancements added to PhoenixBIOS 4.0 Release 6.1 is support for QuickBoot (sub five second boot time), providing faster boot times for computer users. Other features include support for hard drives greater than 8GB, Ultra DMA, ATAPI removable media, above one megabyte SMM, and Plug and Play for Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP). Fujitsu Ltd., one of the leading computer manufacturers in the world working with the latest PhoenixBIOS 4.0, has found that the latest version adds functionalities to the upcoming popular operating systems such as Windows 98 while maintaining quality standards and compatibility.

"We have been using Phoenix BIOS for a long time for both notebooks and desktops series for worldwide market," said Sadao Fukatsu, director of systems architecture, Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc. "The new enhancements enable us to use future popular operating systems with greater ease of use and add greater functionality to this extremely powerful family of notebook and desktop computers." "As the leading supplier of standards-based compatibility software to virtually every major PC systems manufacturer, we are continually extending the performance and adding to functionality of our BIOS software," said Steve Andler, vice president of marketing at Phoenix Technologies.

"These enhancements enable our customers to bring their products to market faster with features that will generate increased end-user demand." "Additional benefits of the Release 6.1 enhancement is that systems manufacturers can now easily integrate the same BIOS core into their complete range of products, including desktops, notebooks and servers." Andler said. "Since this release is designed to be used for all types of PC platforms, manufacturers can use features developed primarily for one type of platform, such as ACPI support (originally developed for notebooks), and use it in other types of systems such as servers and desktops. Release 6.1 will allow system manufacturers to choose features they want and apply them to each platform as needed."
