LXE, Fujitsu Join Forces for a Real-Time Pen Computing Solution
ATLANTA — November 17, 1997 — LXE, a world leader in wireless data communications, and Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc., the leading provider of integrated mobile computing systems, announce the RF-enhanced Point 510 mobile pen computer, the latest product offering from the two companies' multi-year partnership. The LXE-Fujitsu partnership focuses on developing solutions for a variety of data collection applications that require mobile computing and immediate transfer of information, such as healthcare, mobile automation, and route accounting.
As technology partners, LXE adds Radio Frequency (RF) wireless capability to Fujitsu's original Point 510 unit through the integration of a LAN radio and an internal antenna. These RF additions allow the Point 510 to function in a wireless Local Area Network (LAN), so mobile users can access applications and enter data into the Point 510 just as if they were using a PC hardwired to the network. When a mobile user enters data into the RF-enhanced Point 510, the information is communicated directly to the host system — with no wires attached. attached.
"Utilizing Fujitsu's Point 510 computer, we've created a state-of-the-art platform for wireless LAN applications," said Steve Flemig, LXE's Director of New Business Initiatives. "The system's unique design allows us to integrate an LXE internal LAN antenna, which will significantly reduce equipment repair and returns. Our relationship with Fujitsu allows us to get ahead of the competition and provide our customers with exciting, new real-time solutions."
The demand for real-time transfer of information via wireless LANs is especially apparent in the healthcare industry, where the automation of burdensome paperwork and charting can have a significant impact on the bottom line. Using an RF computer network can mean cost reduction and quality-of- care improvements in several areas: space formerly dedicated to record storage can be converted to revenue-generating examining rooms; medical records- related supply costs and staff time associated with medical records are lowered; complete point-of-care nursing is possible; and error reduction in everything from pharmaceutical and meal dispensing to billing occurs due to automation.
The RF-enhanced Point 510 is a lightweight, mobile, personal computer with a powerful 5×86 100 MHz processor that runs in a Windows(R) 95, MS-DOS, or Windows for Workgroups environment. Features include a 1.6 GB hard disk drive, 8 MB DRAM, a color SVGA display, standard keyboard, serial, microphone, headphones, and IrDA ports. The Lithium Ion Battery Pack provides approximately 4 hours of active use on one charge. LXE will provide customers full network integration services, including facility analysis, installation, training, and support.
