Fujitsu Cuts Prices by up to 34 Percent on its Best Selling Tablet Computer
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — September 30, 1996 — Fujitsu Personal Systems, Inc. today announced a major price reduction on its best selling tablet PC, the Stylistic 500, ideal for vertical market decision-support applications.
The list price for the Stylistic 500 is now $ 1,995, a reduction of over 34 percent. This 486 DX2 50 MHz, Windows(R) 95-compatible computer includes 4 MB DRAM, a 170 MB PCMCIA hard disk drive, an 8-inch monochrome LCD, and one Type III or two Type II PCMCIA slots.
Introduced in February 1995, the Stylistic 500 quickly positioned Fujitsu as the worldwide leader in high-end mobile decision support applications using industry-standard hardware and software. The Stylistic 500 is aimed at large corporations deploying a mobile work force to accomplish complex computing tasks.
With a pen interface and Windows software applications, the tablet allows users to easily perform complex computing functions while walking or moving about. Typical environments include healthcare, inspection, merchandising, sales and survey.
"The Stylistic 500 has been our most successful tablet in commercial decision support applications," said Geoff Walker, vice president of marketing. "Tens of thousands of Stylistic 500 tablets are in use by insurance companies, utilities, merchandisers and healthcare providers. Reducing the price will significantly shorten the return on investment for our typical vertical market customer."
The Stylistic 500 weighs just 2.6 pounds and features an industry-standard PC architecture in a flat, clipboard-style pen-driven computer. Used by mobile workers who find it inconvenient to type on conventional laptop computers, the pen tablet can be configured with a choice of transmissive LCD for indoor use, or a transflective LCD which uses the ambient outdoor light to brighten the LCD.
Other models available with significant price reductions include the Stylistic 500 with a 260 MB hard drive, now priced at $ 2,095; and the 340 MB hard drive version at $ 2,195. Previous prices were $ 3,050 and $ 3,160 respectively. The Stylistic 500 can be pre-configured with the pen-enabled version of Microsoft Windows for Workgroups or Windows 95. All versions include the Handwriting Recognition System software from Computer Intelligence Corporation (CIC).
