Fujitsu Personal Systems Expands its Handheld, Portable Offerings

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — March 15, 1993 — Fujitsu Personal Systems Inc. (FPSI), a leading provider of highly integrated systems for mobile computing applications, Monday announced two additions to its existing family of handheld and palmtop products that dramatically enhance its existing mobile computing product offering.

The new systems are the PoqetPad Plus — targeted for use in pen-based field data collection applications, and the Poqet PC Plus — targeted at keyboard-based data collection and corporate messaging applications. The new products incorporate FPSI's advanced power management technology, operate entirely at 3-volts, provide ''on-demand'' backlighting, and have expanded PCMCIA memory storage and I/O port capabilities.

''Today's announcement represents the integration of key technologies to provide systems which have been optimized for size, weight, battery life and overall portability,'' said Lou Panetta, executive vice president of marketing and North American sales, Fujitsu Personal Systems.

Pen Pal Associates, based in California, is a manufacturer of high-level development tools compatible with PenDOS by Communication Intelligence Corp. (CIC) and PenRight! Pro by GRiD Systems.

PoqetPad Plus

The PoqetPad Plus is a full-screen, handheld pen-based, PC-compatible computer designed specifically for use in forms-based data collection applications, such as field inspection, surveys, inventory, merchandising and route sales.

The PoqetPad Plus features an ''on-demand'' backlighting capability and users an 8086-compatible V30 processor operating at 16 MHz. The PoqetPad Plus offers 2MB RAM and two PCMCIA expansion slots — one Type I/II and one Type I/II/III.

Weighing 1.6 lbs. and measuring 10.0 inch by 4.6 inch by 1.5 inch, the PoqetPad Plus can operate from 3-12 hours with a rechargeable NiCad battery using FPSI's advanced power management techniques.

The PoqetPad Plus' interface ports are: built-in point-to-point serial RS-232C infrared link (used for cradles and hardware mounts), RS-232C serial, TTL serial (for bar code wand support) and keyboard. The PoqetPad Plus is a PC-compatible, DOS-based portable computer and will support several development environments, including software from GRiD Systems (PenRight! Pro), Pen Pal Associates (Power Pen Pal) and R2Z (padBase).

The Poqet PC Plus

The Poqet PC Plus, a leader in size, weight and battery life, is well suited for keyboard-based field data collection and corporate messaging where small size and MS-DOS compatibility are key.

Weighing 1.5 lbs. (with batteries) and measuring 5.1 inch by 9.1 inch by 1.4 inch, the Poqet PC Plus is a PC-compatible palmtop portable computer that operates 3-12 hours with a rechargeable NiCad battery and includes FPSI's advanced power management techniques. Like the PoqetPad Plus, the Poqet PC Plus features an ''on-demand'' backlighting capability with a full 80-character by 25 line transflective screen, 2 MB RAM and two PCMCIA expansion slots — Type I/II.

Pricing

Preliminary pricing for the PoqetPad Plus is $1,550. The Poqet PC Plus is priced at $1,120. Both products will be available through FPSI partners, systems integrators and VARs.
