AT&T EO Personnel Communicators Garner Awards

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — September 20, 1993 — The AT&T EO Personal Communicator 440 has won the prestigious 1993 DISCOVER Award for Technological Innovation from Discover Magazine.

The sleek, powerful device that puts fax, electronic mail, cellular phone and personal computing capabilities into the hands of mobile executives will be profiled in the magazine's October issue, which goes on sale Sept. 21.

The AT&T EO 440 was one of seven top winners in the international competition which attracted more than 4,000 entries. Now in their fourth year, the DISCOVER Awards have been described by CBS News Correspondent Mike Wallace as the "Academy Awards" of technology and innovation. "Only, they have a far greater impact on our lives," said Wallace.

"We are honored and delighted to win the 1993 DISCOVER Award," said Alain Rossmann, chief executive officer of EO, Inc. "The judges' decision affirms our vision that we are creating a new category of devices that will fundamentally change the way people communicate."

The 1993 DISCOVER Award is the latest in a series of awards and honors for outstanding technological design and innovation earned by EO for its new communications devices. Immediately following the introduction of EOs first product last year, BYTE magazine chose the AT&T EO Personal Communicator 440 as a finalist in the portable category of its Best of COMDEX/Fall "Shelly" awards. That same week, PC Week named the AT&T EO 440 its "Product of the Week" in its Nov. 23 issue.

CurtCo Publishing selected the AT&T EO Personal Communicator 440 as the 1993 Personal Communicator of the Year, placing it on a distinguished list of products and prominently featuring it in the July issue of Mobile Office, a trade publication closely followed by the product's initial target audience of mobile executives and professionals. In addition, the AT&T EO Personal Communicator 880 was honored twice this year by Pen Magazine, the premier journal of pen-based computing; the Best Pen Tablet honor in February 1993 and the Pen Magazine Readers' Choice award in April.

The AT&T EO Personal Communicator 440 was also selected for display at the prestigious "Innovations '93 Design and Engineering" award exhibit at the Electronic Industry Association's Summer Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago. It was selected by a panel of judges comprised of professionals in the industrial design, engineering and the consumer electronics based on its value to users, aesthetics and contributions to quality of life, as well as innovative product quality.

Acclaim for the EO Personal communicator has not been limited to the United States. EO was one of only two companies to receive a coveted Red Dot for design quality in "Design Innovations '93," an international design competition sponsored by Design Zentrum, a German design organization.

In June 1993, AT&T purchased a majority interest in EO Inc. On Aug. 13, 1993, AT&T announced the intention to merge EO Inc. and GO Corp., developers of the communications-oriented PenPoint operating system, into a single company with the technologies to deliver the platform of choice for Personal Communicators. This represents a major step toward creating a new standard for this emerging market, offering customers compelling communications-oriented products.

EO Inc. headquartered in Mountain View, was founded in 1991 by AT&T; Palo Alto, Calif. based venture capital firm Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Byers; Matsushita; and Marubeni. The partners contribute technical and marketing expertise and funding. In addition, EO has announced a strategic partnership with Olivetti, Europe's leading computer manufacturer.
