Socket Ships Digital Phone Card for Motorola’s Web-Ready Phones

NEWARK, Calif. — August 9, 2000 — Card Plus CDMA Phone Brings Wireless Internet Access to Windows-powered Pocket PCs and Notebooks and Apple PowerBooks

Socket Communications Inc. (Nasdaq:SCKT) today announced a new version of the company's market leading Digital Phone Card wireless connectivity kit that supports Web-ready mobile CDMA handsets from Motorola's popular StarTAC(R), Timeport(tm), Talkabout(R) and V. Series(tm) product lines.

The kit simplifies connecting these mobile phones to any Windows-powered Pocket PC or notebook or Apple PowerBook for instant wireless Internet access, email or remote networking.

The Motorola CDMA handsets supported by the new version of the Digital Phone Card are compatible with the digital wireless networks of Sprint PCS, Verizon Wireless, Bell Mobility, Telus Mobility and other wireless carriers in the U.S. and Canada.

"With the popularity of Motorola's phones, we have provided a large segment of the market with the ability to use their phone as a wireless modem for location-independent Internet access," said Peter Phillips, director of product marketing for Socket. "We've worked closely with Motorola to ensure compatibility across their broad line of domestic CDMA handsets."

Richard N. Clark, Director of IT Architecture for LSI Logic, participated in the beta test program for the Motorola-compatible version of Socket's Digital Phone Card. "The Digital Phone Card is an elegant way to achieve mobile connectivity," Clark said. "The card lets you attach a PDA to a Motorola handset in seconds, so you can get useful work done in places like an airport gate, where you may not have a lot of time or space to operate."

The new Digital Phone Card connection kit includes a CompactFlash Type I card that plugs into any Windows-powered Pocket PC, an attached cable that connects to a variety of Motorola mobile phones, and a PC Card adapter for using the kit with Windows-based handheld PCs, pen tablets and notebooks and with Apple PowerBooks. The kit is available from Socket's resellers in the U.S. and Canada and has a suggested retail price of $139 US. Users should contact their wireless carriers for information about applicable charges for data services.
