Network Multimedia Acquires Revelar Connection Utility and PDA for Newton ALMs

SALT LAKE CITY — March 18, 1996 — Newly formed Network Multimedia announced today that within 30 days it will release a new cross-platform suite of pre-built components (AppWare Loadable Modules or ALMs) that will enhance the momentum and success of the Newton 2.0 OS for its growing user base of several hundred thousand mobile users.

This is made possible by an agreement with Revelar Inc. in which Network Multimedia acquired all rights to the Revelar Connection Utility (RCU) 2.0 — an extensible general connection application developed in AppWare that gives users real time access to data on a Newton PDA from Windows and Macintosh desktops — and its associated suite of pre-built AppWare components.

"When we addressed Newton to desktop connectivity issues with Apple, the solution fell far short of the mark," said Willie Neumann of Hyper Active Inc. "While the Desktop Integration Libraries (DILs) from Apple go a long way toward assisting desktop integration, they still require programming in a low-level language. RCU combined with the high-level ALMs and AppWare is the only solution that we will use."

The Newton PDA has been successful in vertical markets which utilize custom software. The ALMs, used in conjunction with AppWare — a visual high-level, object-based programming environment — are designed to allow developers familiar with the Newton OS to easily create desktop applications that communicate with Newton 2.0 PDAs.

These business-specific applications leverage the power of AppWare to quickly integrate client/server, multimedia, networking and TCP/IP support. For example, with the PDA for Newton ALM, a custom application could be created that automatically downloads packages by double clicking.

"As part of our strategy to enable creative developers to rapidly construct useful applications to increase user productivity, we are excited to introduce RCU 2.0, said Ed Firmage, president of Network Multimedia. "The synergy between Network Multimedia with its AppWare tool and component expertise, and Revelar with its proven Newton solutions track record, will continue to set the standard for Newton PDA to desktop connectivity."

The following ALMs are distributed as part of the suite: PDA for Newton 2.0 links AppWare to the Newton; PDA for Newton Store gives access to Newton stores (PC cards); PDA for Newton Soup allows access to Newton soups (data stores); PDA for Newton Cursor supports all Newton cursor functionality; PDA for Newton Entry enables mapping of dynamic Newton frame information; and PDA for Newton Note supports Note objects (text and graphics).

"Network Multimedia and Revelar make a great team for delivering RCU 2.0. giving users the ability to browse, add, delete, modify, import and export Newton data in real time," said Van Evans, president of Revelar Inc.

RCU 2.0 and the PDA for Newton ALMs will be available within 30 days.
