Processor from VLSI Incorporated in Motorola’s Marco Wireless Communicator

SAN JOSE, Calif. — January 18, 1995 — VLSI Technology Inc. (VLSI) today announced a design win for their enhanced ARM610 32-bit RISC processor in the new Motorola Marco(R) Wireless Communicator.

Announced by Motorola's Wireless Data Group earlier this month at Macworld, the Marco product is the first integrated two-way wireless communications device based on Apple Computer's Newton(R) Intelligence platform.

Powered by VLSI's enhanced ARM610 32-bit RISC processor plus a Motorola microcontroller, the Marco communicator provides full Newton platform compatibility as well as integrates two-way, wide-area wireless communications in a battery-operable, hand-held form factor.

"Motorola believes that integrated wireless communications will drive the growth of the PDA market," said Rick Lane, general manager of Motorola's Personal Communicator Business Unit. "The integration of wireless functionality to the Newton Intelligence platform makes the Marco device particularly attractive to mobile professionals and should accelerate the acceptance of such devices by other customers."

"This design win is a clear indication of VLSI's focus in the PDA market," said Umesh Padval, VLSI's vice president and general manager, Apple Products Division. "We are glad that Motorola's Wireless Data Group has selected the ARM(tm) processor, which offers high performance at very low power, for its Marco communicator."

VLSI Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:VLSI) designs and manufactures high-complexity, application-specific integrated circuits and application-specific standard products targeted to the computing, communications and entertainment marketplaces.

The company offers advanced system-level integration capabilities based on its FSB(tm) (Functional System Block) cell library and cell-based design methodology. VLSI, with revenues in 1993 of $516 million, is based in San Jose, Calif., and has approximately 2,700 employees worldwide.
