Psion Consolidates U.S. Market Gains
BOSTON — February 2, 1994 — Psion, the British portable computer group, today appointed David Elder, president of its U.S. subsidiary in Concord, Mass., as an executive director of the Group Holding Company, Psion Plc, which is quoted on the London Stock Exchange.
The move is seen as a further sign of Psion's emergence as a key player in the North American computer market after the successful launch of its Series 3a palm-top computer in September 1993.
Since its introduction last year the Series 3 range has become the leading PDA in volume shipments worldwide with significant advances reported in the USA where Psion has built a nationwide network of over 1000 outlets in the past 12 months. This has led to a strong showing in Psion's share price which has more than doubled in the past 4 months.
Unlike the Apple Newton, the Series 3a does not rely on handwriting recognition, has an inbuilt keyboard and retails with a street price under $500. According to Elder, "the success of the Series 3a shows that the consumer is concerned with functionality, utility, and with a depth of software and applications, not with "Gee Whiz" technology that does not meet the user's expectations."
The Psion Series 3a is available in The Sharper Image, Sears, CompUSA, Best Buy, The Wiz, the Good Guys, Silo and Lechmere. For further information: David Elder, 508/371-0310, Fax: 508/371-9611.
