LONDON — September 16, 1993 — Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: AAPL) today announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with Alcatel-SEL, which allows the company to use Apple Newton(TM) technology in the development of a wide range of telecommunication products.
The agreement is part of Apple's ongoing strategy to establish Newton technologies, through licensing agreements, as a widely accepted platforf?or Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) devices.
"This agreement underscores the strong momentum behind — and growing global support for — Newton technologies," said Gaston Bastiaens, general manager and vice president of Apple's Personal Interactive Electronics (PIE) division. "We're especially pleased to join forces with Alcatel, one of the world's leading telecommunications concerns, to extend the reach of Newton to even more people."
More specifically, this agreement greatly expands the opportunity for developers — especially in the telephony arena — to create new applications and titles based on Newton technology.
