Apple COO, Marco Landi, to Keynote at Oracle OpenWorld
SAN FRANCISCO — November 7, 1996 — Illuminating the Company's enterprise direction and vision, Marco Landi, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Apple Computer, Inc., will today address an audience of information systems professionals, consultants, and developers at the Oracle OpenWorld conference held at Moscone Center in San Francisco. Landi's keynote kicks-off a day-long program of hands-on sessions and seminars highlighting Apple technologies and enterprise solutions.
"Apple recognizes the importance of the enterprise market and is fully committed to delivering the solutions necessary to ensure the systems our enterprise customers build today won't be the dead-end, single-source legacy systems of tomorrow," said Marco Landi. "In collaboration with industry-leading companies such as Oracle, Apple intends to relentlessly pursue open standards which will offer our enterprise customers freedom of choice, a lower cost of computing, and a protection of their technology investment."
In his keynote, Landi will highlight announcements and product demonstrations that underscore Apple's two primary objectives for the enterprise: to offer compatibility across multiple computing platforms through collaborative efforts with companies such as Oracle and Sun, and to deliver a range of Apple-labeled enterprise solutions that are easy to install, manage, integrate, and support.
Landi will present Apple's direction and vision for enterprise computing in relation to three key industry trends: the rapid growth of intranets, multimedia convergence, and component technologies.
Announcements
Oracle is investigating Apple's HotSauce MCF and a new database application of Apple's HotSauce technology, code-named Babelfish. The advanced HotSauce MCF technology, which is an open standard for describing structured content, allows users to connect any kind of view with any kind of data. Babelfish uses HotSauce MCF to enable users to search unrelated databases without knowing where the data is stored or how to access it.
"HotSauce will allow developers to build data access tools that work more naturally with any kind of internal or external data," said Gary Bloom, senior vice president of Oracle's Products and Platforms Technology division. "Oracle is pleased that Apple has chosen OpenWorld as the venue for previewing Babelfish, an exciting new database application built upon the HotSauce technology."
Oracle and Apple announced the certification of the Oracle WebServer 2.0 and Oracle Workgroup Server 7.3.2 products for the AIX-based Apple Network Server family. These products running on Apple's Network Server provide customers with a full range of scalable, secure web application platforms.
Demonstrations
Highlighting the benefits of Apple products for enterprise customers, Landi will demonstrate several enterprise solutions. Attendees will see how they can increase the up time of their mission critical applications by using the hot-swap capabilities of Apple's AIX-based Network Server.
With Apple's newly-announced Newton 2000, the ultimate mobile Internet/intranet access client, customers will see a wireless database query using AllPen Software's NetHopper web browser to perform online intranet transactions.
Finally, attendees will see a multiple database query using Apple's HotSauce standard, code-named Babelfish. Babelfish is a powerful demonstration of the strength of the HotSauce standard, and operates as a database integration engine, performing an automated "librarian" function. For example, when the end user specifies a database query, Babelfish automatically writes the sequel query language (SQL) code to retrieve the answer. With SQL alone, the user has to know where the data is and how to access it. By using HotSauce MCF in conjunction with SQL, the user only has to know what he or she is looking for.
Apple Day at OpenWorld
In conjunction with Marco Landi's keynote, Apple will host a series of seminar programs highlighting Apple and third party enterprise solutions. Apple also has a booth on the exhibit floor, #1618.
