Apple Ships Newton Internet Enabler Tools Suite To Drive Powerful Internet Solutions For Newton PDAs
NEW YORK — June 17, 1996 — Apple Computer, Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) today announced shipment of Newton Internet Enabler (NIE) 1.0 for Newton 2.0, a suite of connectivity tools that allows Internet-based application development for Newton hand-held computers, including the Apple MessagePad. NIE will enable Newton developers to create powerful Internet-based solutions such as web, mail, news, Telnet, and FTP applications.
NIE provides support for standard Internet and communications protocols such as HTTP, HTML, SMTP, POP3, IMAP4, PPP, SLIP, and UDP. The suite also includes a dialer with a script engine and a domain name resolver (DNR). Using NIE resources, software applications allow Newton hand-held computer users to interact with TCP/IP networks through public Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and private corporate intranets.
"NIE is a key component of our Internet strategy for the Newton platform," said Jim Groff, senior vice president of Apple's information appliance division. "It will drive an exciting range of innovative Internet-based solutions for Newton, developed specifically for the mobile customer who requires seamless access to the Internet and/or an intranet, regardless of location."
More than 50 independent and corporate software developers, including QUALCOMM, Incorporated, AllPen Software and Lunatech Research, have announced plans to integrate the NIE into current and future releases of their products.
"For the past two years, Internet connectivity efforts have been focused on the desktop environment," said Andrew Seybold, editor-in- chief, Andrew Seybold's Outlook on Communications and Computing. "The growth of Internet-based enterprise and commerce applications is driving an increased need for mobile Internet connectivity. High-functionality PDA platforms like Newton will play a significant role in providing that connectivity."
NIE is available immediately to developers at no cost through the Newton developer home page at http://dev.info.apple.com/newton. A beta version of NIE was made available to developers in May 1996.
