IBM Debuts the ThinkPad TransNote at the Mobile Insights Conference
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — February 21, 2001 — More Than 300 Key Executives At Leading Mobile and Wireless Industry Conference Offered First Public Demonstration of Innovative Converged Technology Device
IBM Corp. offered the first public look at the new IBM(R) ThinkPad(R) TransNote(TM), on the first day it became generally available, to more than 300 industry executives attending the Mobile Insights 2001 conference and exposition. The two-day event is the leading mobile and wireless industry conference.
"The ThinkPad TransNote defines a new category of notebook computers, and as such will have a major impact on the mobile computing world. We are pleased that IBM chose our conference as the forum to reach key industry executives and members of the press on the day the TransNote became generally available," said J. Gerry Purdy, Ph.D., president and CEO of Mobile Insights.
"The ThinkPad TransNote provides an ideal solution for highly mobile users who are looking to combine pen and paper with a mobile computer for more effective and efficient management of information," said Rick McGee, vice president, mobile brand marketing, IBM Personal Computing Division. "The major industry executives in the audience at the Mobile Insights Conference provided a perfect forum for the first formal public debut of the ThinkPad TransNote."
The ThinkPad TransNote joins the ranks of other major groundbreaking products that have been announced at previous Mobile Insights conferences, including the Palm Pilot V. The ThinkPad TransNote's next generation form-factor duplicates the ease of use and flexibility of a traditional paper-based notebook, but integrates a powerful and small portable computer to bridge computing with the written word. Notes and drawings made on a paper pad attached to the device can be instantly transferred, via IBM ThinkScribe digital notepad and pen technology, to the attached computer. These files can then be stored, manipulated, or attached to other files. Target applications include healthcare and field force automation (FFA) solutions, which are dependent on pre-defined forms and note taking. IBM's TransNote is a full-function computer system that incorporates a 10.4-inch pivoting touch screen LCD, and is based on mobile Intel Pentium III processor. It is also ready for wireless connectivity via optional 802.11b wireless LAN or Bluetooth PC card technology.
